RBT Exam Structure: Know Before You Test

Before you sit for the RBT exam, it’s crucial to understand exactly how the test is structured—so you can study smarter, not harder.

Here’s how the official Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) Exam is designed:

Total Questions: 85

Scored Questions: 75 count toward your final score

Unscored Questions: 10 are trial (pilot) items mixed in randomly. You won’t know which—they’re used for future test development.

⏱️ Time Limit: 90 Minutes

You’ll have 90 minutes total, so time management matters. That’s just over 1 minute per question.

📊 Passing Score

Since the unscored items don’t affect your result, focus on each question as if it counts.

You must answer approximately 60 out of 75 scored questions correctly (about 80%) to pass.

📚 What Content Areas Are Covered?

The exam is based on the RBT Task List (2nd Edition) and divided into 6 key areas:

Measurement – Data collection, graphs, IOA

Assessment – Preferences, ABC data, functional assessments

Skill Acquisition – Discrete trials, chaining, prompting

Behavior Reduction – Functions of behavior, intervention strategies

Documentation & Reporting – Objective session notes, incident reports

Professional Conduct & Scope – Ethics, communication, boundaries

Each section has real-world relevance, especially for those already working or training in ABA settings.

Why This Structure Matters for You

Many first-time RBT candidates underestimate the test’s depth. Understanding the structure gives you a strategic edge:

  • You’ll prioritize studying based on tested topics
  • You can simulate real exam conditions using full-length practice tests
  • You’ll stay calm and focused, knowing how time and scoring work
